The Duration of Dermal Fillers

How Long Dermal Fillers Last

Dermal fillers are a popular cosmetic treatment that are used to address various concerns such as facial wrinkles, volume loss, and facial contouring. One common question that people have regarding fillers is “how long do they last?”. In this blog post, we will explore the expected durations of dermal fillers and the various factors that impact the duration of them.

Types of Dermal Fillers

Before getting into the longevity of dermal fillers, it is important to understand that there are different types of fillers. The types of temporary fillers include hyaluronic acid-based fillers, and semi-permanent or permanent fillers, which are composed of different materials. Temporary fillers are most used and that is what we will refer to throughout this blog.

Factors Affecting Longevity

Type of Filler: As mentioned earlier, different fillers have different durations. Temporary fillers typically last between 6 to 18 months, depending on the specific product and the area of treatment.

Metabolism and Lifestyle: Your individual metabolism and lifestyle choices can make a significant impact on the longevity of dermal fillers. If you smoke, drink alcohol, have poor skincare habits, and experience excessive sunlight exposure, dermal fillers may break down more quickly, decreasing their longevity.

Treatment Area: The area where the filler is injected also plays a role in how long it lasts. Areas with more movement, such as the lips or nasolabial folds, may experience faster breakdown compared to areas with less movement, such as the cheeks.

Injection Technique: The skill and technique of the injector can impact the longevity of dermal fillers. When a filler is properly injected into the target area, it will maximize the longevity of the filler.

Expected Durations of Common Dermal Fillers

While the exact duration can vary depending on the factors mentioned above, here is a general guideline for the expected durations of some commonly used temporary dermal fillers:

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers: HA fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, are among the most popular temporary fillers. They typically last between 6 to 18 months, with some variations designed specifically for longer-lasting results.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) Fillers: CaHA fillers, like Radiesse, can last around 12 to 18 months. These fillers stimulate collagen production, providing both immediate and long-term benefits.

Poly-L-lactic Acid (PLLA) Fillers: PLLA fillers, such as Sculptra, are known for their collagen-stimulating properties. While the initial effects may fade after a few months, the collagen production stimulated by these fillers can provide results that last up to two years.

Maintaining Longevity

To maximize the longevity of your dermal fillers, it's important to follow these tips:

Follow Aftercare Instructions: Your injector will provide you with specific after-injection care instructions. Be sure to thoroughly review them and strictly adhere to their advice. This will ensure that the filler is properly taken care of.

Practice Good Skincare: Your skincare routine plays an important role in the longevity of your dermal filler. Be sure to routinely moisturize and cleanse your skin while also avoiding excessive sunlight exposure.

Consider Maintenance Treatments: Depending on the filler used and your desired results, your injector may recommend maintenance treatments to ensure long-lasting effects. These treatments can help maintain the desired volume and contour over time.

Consult with a Qualified Injector: It's important to consult with a qualified and experienced injector to discuss your goals and expectations. They will assess your unique needs, recommend the most suitable filler, and provide an estimate of how long the results are likely to last based on your individual circumstances.
