About Abilene, T  X

Although Abiline, TX has a population of over 100,000, it is only the 27th most populous city in the state. Originally established by cattlemen as a shipping hub along the railroads that ran through the area, Abilene relied heavily on agriculture during the early stages of its history. During this period, Abilene was able to get by, but never saw the economy or population flourish. This all changed in 1940, when land was purchased and turned into a US Army base. Camp Berkeley in itself had a population double that of the Abilene population. After World War II, many of those that trained at the nearby base moved back to Abilene to establish homes, businesses, and the rest of their lives.

Today, Abilene is home to numerous parks, school systems, and universities. Although Camp Berkeley is no more, the military still plays a prominent role in the local economy. The Dyess Air Force Base is the largest employer in the city, with other government entities not lagging far behind.
